Cricket in the Village dates as far back as the early 1900s when one of our fields, The Oval – situated in the heart of the Irene suburb- was created to play cricket against the concentration camp inmates. In 1965, a local resident, Mr Lubbe, perceived a great need for a cricket club for potential cricketers living in the southern areas ( which would two years later become Verwoerdburg and then eventually Centurion). In due course, eleven replies were received, and a team was formed to play several social matches as Willie XI. Soon thereafter, the team entered into the league which required a change in name and eventually after much discussion the name Villagers Cricket Club was accepted. Later, Adv D van der Bijl turned a cultivated farmland into a cricket field. In the 1971/1972 season, the Villagers Cricket Club members took out membership and started using the Irene Country Club field as their home ground. In the years 2023/2024, enhancements were made to the cricket nets and practice facility, giving them a contemporary appearance.
